CLAYTON

Clayton is the geographic center of metropolitan St. Louis, the county seat for St. Louis county, and considered the area's second downtown. In minutes, you can walk from beautiful residential neighborhoods into the central business district to work or to visit your favorite restaurant. Clayton is full of contrasts: It's a leading center of commerce, home to 80 Forbes and Fortune 500 companies and a prime residential community with a top-rated public school district and city services.

The architecture in Clayton is diverse. You'll find private streets with substantial, elegant historic homes built after the 1904 World's Fair. Old Town Clayton offers a mix of old farmhouses and handsome brick single family homes as well as new luxury condos, sophisticated town homes, villas and urban lofts.

Clayton is restaurant territory. Whatever your tastes, from fine American or European cuisine to ethnic and casual dining, you'll find your ideal restaurant in Clayton. There are also a number of unique retail areas where you'll discover antique shops, fine clothing merchants, art galleries, book stores and other specialty shops of interest. In the fall, Clayton hosts the Saint Louis Art Fair, one of the nation's top art festivals. In the summer, the Saint Louis Jazz Festival attracts top performers to Clayton.

Clayton is also an intellectual nucleus with top-ranked universities, including Washington University, Fontbonne College and Concordia Seminary to name a few. Excellent public and independent elementary schools, such as the Forsyth School, the Wilson School, St. Michael's School, Clayton Academy and Central Presbyterian School, are located in Clayton as well. The Center of Clayton, a recreation and fitness facility, opened in 2000 to serve area residents, students and businesses. Shaw Park is home to Clayton's outdoor swimming pool, diving pool, tennis courts, playing fields and ice skating rink.

The MetroLink light rail system will commence service to Clayton in 2007, providing a convenient link east to Forest Park, Washington University Medical Center and downtown St. Louis, north to Lambert International Airport, and south to Maplewood and Highway 44.
