KIRKWOOD, GLENDALE and DES PERES
Kirkwood takes its name from the chief engineer of the Pacific Railroad, James P. Kirkwood, a fitting gesture for the first commuter suburb west of the Mississippi. St. Louisans began moving to Kirkwood around 1850 to escape the perils and pressures of city life. Today the Kirkwood train depot remains at the heart of this community and it's still in service for passenger travel.
Kirkwood, Glendale and Des Peres offer a variety of homes on shady streets where neighbors know each other. Kirkwood real estate history can be seen in its diverse Victorian architecture and old historic homes. You'll also find newer luxury condominiums, urban lofts, ranch houses and traditional single family homes. Glendale is an exclusively residential city, comprised of tree-lined streets and a friendly atmosphere. Residential development in Des Peres began in the mid-20's and today is experiencing significant growth of both new subdivisions as well as the redevelopment of existing neighborhoods with the demolition of older homes and the replacement with larger, luxury homes.
The highly respected public school districts of Kirkwood, Webster Groves and Parkway serve these communities.
Des Peres has an upscale shopping mall, anchored by Nordstrom and other well-known retailers. The Lodge, a new state-of-the-art community recreation facility, opened in 2003 with a gymnasium, running track, fitness center, meeting rooms, an indoor wave pool and an outdoor aquatic center.
The commercial district of Kirkwood beckons with a range of retail, entertainment and restaurant possibilities, many of which are housed in charming period buildings. Life here is friendly, easy-going and convenient. You'll also find The Magic House - St. Louis Children's Museum, featuring all kinds of hands-on experiments for kids and families. In keeping with its small town nature, Kirkwood hosts festivals, a wonderful farmer's market and a variety of year 'round activities that are well supported by residents.
For recreation, Kirkwood has over 280 acres of parks throughout the city. Kirkwood Park, one of the community's largest parks, features a community center, hockey rink, tennis courts, ball diamonds and barbeque pits. Likewise, Des Peres is proud of its parks and recreation system offering seven locations and over 100 acres of parkland. Kirkwood also has its own community library within walking distance of the surrounding neighborhoods.
