UNIVERSITY CITY IN ST. LOUIS
Although it's a suburb, University City definitely has an urban, cosmopolitan feel. It's a diverse and lively community, both intellectually and culturally. Washington University anchors one edge of this community, and many of its artists, poets and writers, as well as other members of the school's community, live and work in University City.
Many of the neighborhoods in University City date from the turn of the century, and the homes are architecturally distinctive and varied in size and stature. Start your visit to University City with a trip to the Delmar Loop, an urban commercial district that really reflects the interests of this community. The Loop is always a beehive of pedestrian activity with attractions such as foreign films at the renowned Tivoli Theater, all kinds of restaurants and an eclectic assortment of small specialty shops. In the Loop, you'll also see the St. Louis Walk of Fame, which honors famous St. Louisans such as Chuck Berry, Vincent Price and others.
The arts prevail in the Loop area with the Craft Alliance, a non-profit gallery and educational resource for the arts. A block or so off the Loop you'll find COCA, the Center for Contemporary Arts, which also a teaching and performing arts organization. The St. Louis Symphony Community Music School is just around the corner from COCA.
There are 17 parks in University City with recreational facilities including a municipal pool, a 9-hole golf course, baseball diamonds, soccer and football fields and tennis courts. Newly renovated Heman Park Community Center offers a fitness club, indoor soccer field and meeting facilities. Not surprisingly, this community has an excellent public library as well.
